M.C Escher Drawing Hands

Maurits Cornelis Escher (Dutch, 1898-1972) created the lithograph entitled Drawing Hands in 1948. Like many of his other self-portraits, this one presents the subject as a cool and cerebral maker, a self-fashioner. Hands that draw; hands that create.

With its stairways that climb without ascending, its Mobius patterns, Escher's art challenges our sense of beginning and ending, of the boundary between art and artist. Minutely detailed, rigorously composed, it insists on its own reality. As Escher was fond of saying "None of us needs to doubt the existence of an unreal, subjective space. But I for one an not sure of the existence of a real, objective space."
