FRIDA KAHLO (July 6, 1907 - July 13, 1954): A Mexican painter deeply influenced by indigenous culture, Kahlo suffered a series of physical traumas. She contracted polio at age 6, and at 19 sustained injuries in a bus accident from which she was plagued by extreme pain for the rest of her life. Her tumultuous marriage with painter Diego Rivera led her to take many lovers, male and female, including revolutionary Leon Trotsky. Drawing on her personal life, Kahlo's work is characterized by its stark portrayal of pain.
