Lindisfarne:

Named for a tiny island off the northern coast of England, the great masterpieces of manuscript illumination. Monks from lona seeking to extend their evangelizing work southward erected the monastery at Lindisfarne in 635. Early in the eighth century a monk named Eadfrith (d.721), the bishop of Lindsfarne, lettered the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, in Latin translation, onto 258 pages made of elaborately prepared calfskin. Three hundred years later an interlinear translation was added, the first English version of the Gospels. Among the forty-some innovative pigments Eadfrith used to create the book's fifteen fully decorated pages was red lead, which he applied in tiny drips-one page alone has 10.600 dots. The page shown here is the Saint Matthew cross-carpet page, a kind of design much influenced by Oriental pray mats.
