SOCRATES
(c. 470 - 399 BCE)
The 'Socratic Problem' is that Socrates never wrote anything
down, so all we know of him is through the writings of his student,
Plato. Socrates pioneered a method of teaching that used questions and
answers rather than lectures. Sentenced to death for denying the
reality of the gods and corrupting the youth of Athens, Socrates calmly
drank the poison he was given - hemlock - and died a noble death.
