Group of Men Lifting Bird with Blue Egg by Hieronymus Bosch 6H

PN# JB29
  • $84.00 USD

Birds play a major role among the naked figures on the central panel of the Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch. They were painted very accurately, seemingly from nature and evince great admiration for the latter. In the context of the painting however, the birds also symbolize love and lust. The bird in the blue egg being carried by men on the left of the panel looks like a hoopoe. This crowned bird stood for uncleanliness because it didn't keep a clean nest. In the Middle Ages it also symbolized visiting prostitutes.
