# Gargoyles and Dragons

In architecture, a **gargoyle** is a carved stone **grotesque animal spirit** with a spout designed to convey water away from the side of a building. But to art lovers, a **gargoyle** is a mythical **winged dog beast** who snarls from roof tops to **scare away evil**. Gargoyles have many personalities -- menacing, pensive or goofy. We look for a variety of **Gargoyle statues**, small and large. Some of the most famous gargoyles appear in the architecture at **Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris** and other gothic churches from the middle ages.
