**Sakountala or L'abandon (The Abandonment)**  
This early work refers directly to **Camille Claudel's** troublesome lover's relationship with **Auguste Rodin**. The dramatic plaster sculpture was first exhibited at the Salon of 1888. The title **Sakountala** refers to the main character in a narrative by the fifth century **Hindu poet Kalidasa**. After being bewitched, the dashing prince **Dushyanta** forgets that he is married to the young **Sakountala**. When he meets her again later, he kneels down before her and asks for forgiveness.
