## A Court Fascinated by Nature

Maximilian II had a keen interest in zoology. He kept scientists at his court, and they helped Arcimboldo with this painting.

The Water canvas of 1566 belongs to a series called the Four Elements. It hangs in Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum.

## Heads Built from Things

Arcimboldo was famous for composite heads. His first Four Seasons paintings, from 1563, used flowers, fruit, twigs, and leaves.

Each Arcimboldo surreal portrait is a puzzle. The eye finds a face first and then the animals.

Surrealists such as Dali rediscovered him in the 20th century. See more in our [Parastone Museum Replicas](https://www.museumize.com/collections/parastone-museum-replicas).

## Display and Care

At 0.8 lbs, the Arcimboldo Water statue sits easily on a desk or shelf. Dust the fish portrait figurine with a soft dry brush. Keep the sea life composite head away from damp air.

## Giuseppe Arcimboldo in Brief

Giuseppe Arcimboldo lived from 1527 to 1593. He began as a painter at Milan Cathedral, like his father. In 1562 he joined the Habsburg court, serving Ferdinand I, Maximilian II, and Rudolf II. An Arcimboldo surreal portrait like this one still startles. The Arcimboldo Water statue keeps that puzzle alive.
