### About the Artwork

In 1938, the city of Toulouse commissioned _The Air_ to commemorate the pilots of _L'Aéropostale_, the pioneering French airmail service whose aviators connected continents under often dangerous conditions. Rather than depicting machinery or heroic action, Maillol chose the timeless language of the human form.
