## The Artichoke Motif

The artichoke is a cultivated thistle from the Mediterranean. Its edible part is the flower bud. In ancient Greece, a thyrsus staff could carry an artichoke or a pine cone at its head. The thistle flower bud is the edible part. Its overlapping bracts suit a sculpted form. This classic garden motif has a layered, rhythmic look.

## What Is a Finial?

A finial marks the top or end of an object. The word comes from the Latin finis, meaning end. In architecture, finials emphasize the peak of a dome, spire, gable, or roof. A stylized artichoke riser lifts the form above the ground. A classic garden motif works well at a gate or a step.

## Finials in the Garden

Garden finials top posts, gates, pergolas, and railings. They also sit on pedestals or plinths as stand-alone focal points.
