## An Artist Who Lived at the Zoo

Bugatti first became fascinated by African elephants at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. In Antwerp he found their Asian cousins in an enclosure shaped like an Egyptian temple.

He visited the zoo almost daily. He fed the begging giants and studied their sensitive trunks.

A begging elephant sculpture by Bugatti is known in bronze from about 1908. He modeled it from life.

## A Famous Family Name

Rembrandt was the son of Carlo Bugatti, a leading Art Nouveau designer. His older brother Ettore founded the Bugatti car company.

Ettore later used one of Rembrandt's elephants as a mascot for a premium car. This Antwerp Zoo elephant figurine echoes that story.

## Rembrandt Bugatti in Brief

Bugatti lived from 1884 to 1916. He studied at the Brera Academy in Milan from the age of 16. His animal portraits are admired for their liveliness.
