## The Oldest Culture of West Mexico

Chupicuaro is named for a site in Guanajuato, near the Lerma River. It dates to the Late Preclassic period.

Few ruins and stone tools remain. The ceramic tradition, however, is among the best known in Central America.

## Three Colors in the Grave

Famous three-color pottery was found mostly in graves. A pre-Columbian terracotta replica mimics that painted look. It includes geometric vases, vessels, and animal and human figurines.

Female figurines are usually extremely broad-hipped, probably a sign of fertility. Related cultures link them to the earth and the turning seasons.

The Met's Chupicuaro figure vessel dates to the 3rd to 1st century BC. It shows the same red, black, and white designs. Find more in our [Parastone Museum Replicas](https://www.museumize.com/collections/parastone-museum-replicas).

## Display and Care

At 0.6 lbs, the Chupicuaro fertility statue fits a shelf, desk, or display case. Dust the Mexican earth goddess figurine with a soft dry brush. Any pre-Columbian terracotta replica prefers dry air.

## West Mexico in Brief

Chupicuaro tombs also held skulls, obsidian points, shell ornaments, and musical instruments. Most of the main site was flooded by a dam in the 1940s. A Chupicuaro fertility statue is a rare keepsake of that lost place. The Chupicuaro mother goddess carries the culture forward.
