## A Study for a Lost Altarpiece

In 1507 the merchant Jacob Heller commissioned Durer to paint an altarpiece for a Dominican church in Frankfurt. Its theme was the ascension of Mary.

The central panel was lost in a fire in 1729. More than twenty preliminary sketches survive, and this Heller altarpiece study is the most famous.

## Hands in Pen and White

The drawing dates to about 1508. Durer used pen and ink with white highlights on blue paper he prepared himself.

It is held at the Albertina in Vienna. A newer theory says the Heller altarpiece study may record hands from an Italian painting. A popular tale names Durer's brother as the model, but that story is unverified.
