## Bastet, the Cat Goddess

Bastet was the principal cat goddess, though other goddesses sometimes took cat form. Every Bastet Egyptian cat statue honors her. She was the daughter of Osiris and Isis.

Festivals in her honor were so ecstatic that she was also goddess of song, dance, and music. The moon cycle tied her to fertility.

## The Cat in the British Museum

The original is bronze, about 600 BC, from the Late Period. It was probably found at Saqqara, at an animal cemetery.

A winged scarab adorns the forehead, a sign of the sun god Khepri and of rebirth. The chest carries a silver wedjat amulet, the eye of Horus.

The gold nose ring and earrings were common on Egyptian cat figures but rarely survive. Our British Museum cat replica keeps them. See more in our [Egyptian Museum Replicas](https://www.museumize.com/collections/culture-egyptian-museum-replicas).

## Display and Care

At 5 lbs, the Gayer-Anderson cat statue needs a firm shelf or console. Dust the Egyptian cat goddess statue with a soft dry brush. Keep the earrings away from snags. The Egyptian cat goddess statue prefers a quiet shelf.

## The Gayer-Anderson Cat in Brief

The British Museum holds the bronze original, which stands about 42 cm tall. Robert Grenville Gayer-Anderson and Mary Stout Shaw gave it to the museum. This British Museum cat replica keeps that gift in view. The Gayer-Anderson cat statue is named for him.
