## From an Abandoned Block of Carrara Marble to Florence's Civic Symbol

This **Michelangelo David statue** is a reproduction of one of the most analyzed sculptures in Western art history. Michelangelo carved the original between 1501 and 1504 from a single block of Carrara marble. The finished work stands 17 feet tall and is now held at the **Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence**. This reproduction stands 10.5 in H, cast in white resin with subtle grey veining to suggest the appearance of marble.

The commission had an unusual origin. In the 1460s, the governors of the Cathedral of Florence purchased a massive block of marble to create a series of Old Testament figures for the cathedral's roofline. Multiple sculptors attempted the project and left it unfinished. The block sat outdoors for 25 years. In 1501, Michelangelo - then 26 years old - was given the contract. He completed the **Michelangelo David statue** in roughly two years.

## Why the David Ended Up at the Palazzo Vecchio

At completion, the **Michelangelo David statue** weighed six tons, too heavy for the cathedral roofline it was designed for. City officials redirected it to the entrance of the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence's seat of civic government. There it became a political symbol. The alert, youthful David represented Florence's resistance to the authoritarian city-states nearby. Michelangelo had designed the piece to be viewed from far below, which is why the head and hands appear oversized. At street level, those proportions became defining features of the work.

## David Before the Battle with Goliath

**Michelangelo** chose to depict David in the moment before the fight, not after. The sling rests over his left shoulder. His gaze is fixed and tense. This was a departure from earlier **Renaissance** treatments by Donatello and Verrocchio, both of whom depicted David after his victory. Michelangelo's choice puts the viewer inside the decision - the outcome not yet determined.

## About Michelangelo (1475-1564)

**Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni** was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet. He completed both the [Pieta](/products/pieta-by-michelangelo-parastone-collection-mic02) and the David before the age of 30. Pope Julius II later commissioned him to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling, which he finished in 1512. He was the first artist to have a biography written during his own lifetime. His work in sculpture influenced the Mannerist movement that followed.
