A version of the name, **Nokomis**, appears in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1856 poem The Song of Hiawatha, where Nokomis is Hiawatha's grandmother, a well-known Ojibwe-derived name in American literature. Frank Lloyd Wright likely drew on both the promise-keeping meaning of Nakoma and the familiarity of Longfellow's poem when he named the two figures for the Nakoma Country Club. The figures are said to represent two figures from Winnebago tribal culture, though Wright's depictions reflect the romanticized style common to that era rather than a documented Winnebago source for the names themselves.
