# Rodin Adam from Gates of Hell Statue – Biblical Figure Sculpture 18H

## First Man, First Burden: The Rodin Adam Statue

This Rodin Adam statue shows the first man at the moment innocence gives way to shame. It stands 18 in high in bonded stone with a bronze finish, on a black base.

**Auguste Rodin** gives Adam a human weight, not a hero's pose. The body leans, the head dips, and the figure seems caught between dignity and regret.

## From the Gates of Hell

In 1880 the French state commissioned Rodin to design a doorway for a planned museum of decorative arts. The museum was never built.

Rodin drew the Gates of Hell from Dante's Inferno, and it grew to about 180 figures. He worked on it for the rest of his life.

He also made Adam and Eve as separate figures meant to flank the doorway. Adam is the plainest Rodin Gates of Hell figure. Adam from Gates of Hell was shown at the Paris Salon in 1881.

## Shame, Awakening, Responsibility

Rodin refuses to idealize the moment. This Adam from Gates of Hell is a man, not a perfect marble god.

The torso, shoulders, and stance carry the story. Some viewers read shame, others the quiet shock of becoming fully human. This biblical Adam sculpture holds both readings. As a Rodin Gates of Hell figure, he carries the weight of Dante's poem.

## Display and Care

At 12 to 14 lbs, the Rodin Adam statue needs a sturdy shelf, console, or desk. Dust it with a soft dry cloth. Keep it away from damp rooms and strong sun.

## Auguste Rodin in Brief

Auguste Rodin lived from 1840 to 1917. He treated the human body as a vehicle for psychology. He let the marks of his hands show in the surface.
