## What Is a Finial?

A finial marks the top or end of an object. The word comes from the Latin finis, meaning end. In architecture, finials emphasize the peak of a dome, spire, gable, or roof. A cement lawn ornament in this shape is a timeless choice. Cast cement holds fine detail and weathers well.

## Finials in the Garden

Garden finials top posts, gates, pergolas, and railings. They also sit on pedestals or plinths as stand-alone focal points. Some finials resemble a spire or obelisk. Others take the form of animals or flowers. A round base garden finial also looks fine on a stone pier. An English Antique ball has the look of old stone. Pairs work well at gates and steps.

## Placing the Finial

At 40 to 45 lbs, this piece stays put on a gate pier or a wall. Set it on a level, solid surface. Browse more pieces in our [Garden Art collection](https://museumize.com/collections/garden-art). Use a garden gate topper at each side of an entrance. Place the round base garden finial on a firm pad. A bed of sand under the base helps keep it level.

## About Garden Ornament

Garden ornament has long marked entrances and paths. Balls, urns, and obelisks are classic shapes. A cement lawn ornament and a garden gate topper suit a formal garden. An English Antique ball ties the look to old stone walls. Garden ornament adds structure to a soft planting.
