# Russian Grape Leaves Ornate Pattern Drop Dangle Earrings with Carnelian Stones 2L

## Fruit from an Italian Vineyard: Russian Grape Earrings

Grape leaves and heavy clusters hang from each ear in antique gold. A round cabochon of carnelian or garnet sits among the fruit like a ripe berry. These Russian grape earrings are adapted from a painting by **Karl Bryullov**.

The painting is Italian Midday, finished in 1827. These carnelian dangle earrings pull one detail out of it: the harvest.

## A Russian Painter in Italy

Karl Bryullov was Russian, but he worked in Rome until 1835. Tsar Nicholas I commissioned Italian Midday in 1826. Bryullov sent it to Saint Petersburg in August 1827.

It is a pair to his Italian Morning of 1823. The Empress hung it in her private rooms in the Winter Palace. Bryullov painting earrings come from a picture that was loved at court.

## The Harvest Behind the Grape Leaf Earrings

The painting is also called Italian Girl Picking Grapes. Its subject is warm and sunny, the opposite of a Russian winter. Grape leaf earrings in gold hold that warmth.

## Bryullov's Romantic Russia

Bryullov became the star of late Russian Romanticism. His Last Day of Pompeii, painted from 1830 to 1833, made him famous across Europe. Italian Midday is a smaller and sunnier canvas.

## Wearing and Display

The Russian grape earrings are about 2 in long, so they suit an updo. Gold plate over pewter is light on the ear. Keep the cabochons dry.

Carnelian dangle earrings wear well with autumn colors. Bryullov painting earrings look best with a plain neckline. Store the pair in a small box. See more in our [Museum Jewelry Earrings](https://www.museumize.com/collections/museum-jewelry-earrings).
