## A Legendary Cabaret

In 1881, Rodolphe Salis opened the Chat Noir cabaret on the Boulevard Rochechouart. It became a safe haven for the stage arts.

Steinlen lived at its heart. He designed scenery, worked on shadow plays, and drew the poster that covered Paris walls.

## A Black and Red Cat

The black and red cat uses the colors of anarchy. It became the symbol of Montmartre, the district where artists gathered.

The text Montjoie Montmartre, or Montmartre my joy, forms a halo above the cat's head. The Black Cat Montmartre figurine keeps that mystical presence.

Steinlen loved the stray cats of Montmartre's roofs and adopted many. See more in the [Klimt, Mucha and Art Nouveau Collection](https://www.museumize.com/collections/artist-klimt-mucha-art-nouveau). The Steinlen Chat Noir statue turns a famous poster into an object. A Black Cat Montmartre figurine recalls the cabaret's glow.

The Le Chat Noir poster statue keeps the cat's proud stance. Every Steinlen cat sculpture carries the spirit of Paris in the 1890s.

## Display and Care

The small size, at 1.6 lbs, suits a shelf or desk. The mini size, at 8 oz, fits a tight corner. Dust the Steinlen Chat Noir statue with a soft dry brush.

## Steinlen in Brief

Steinlen lived from 1859 to 1923. He was Swiss-born and active in Paris. The Steinlen Chat Noir statue honors his best known cat. Cats always played a major role in his work, and this Steinlen cat sculpture shows why.
