Piere-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919): Renoir and his friend Monet were two of the principal Impressionist painters. He used attenuated brushstrokes in complementary colors to create light, movement and space in his paintings. He consciously opted to paint beauty and joyous side of life as exemplified by works such as Bal du Moulin de la Galette, a dance held on the site around the La Galette windmill at the highest point in the poor working class neighborhood Montmartre.
