The Rosetta Stone was written and chiseled in 196 BC to celebrate the coronation of Ptolemy V, the child King of Egypt when he was 13 years old. The original black basalt stone is 45 by 28 inches and weighs 1700 pounds. For almost 2,000 years the stone was relatively unknown. PN WU75482

The Rosetta Stone was found in 1799 by the French Army during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign outside the town of Rosetta. When the French Surrendered to the British, valuable Egyptian Artifacts were declared the property of the British Crown. One French General regarded the stone as his person possession and hid it in spite of the fact that the French scholars had surrendered all other artifacts the the British. It is unclear how the Stone eventually ended up in British Hands.

The Rosetta Stone was put in the British Museum in 1802. Only twice in the past two hundred years has the Rosetta Stone been taken from the museum. Once during WWII it was buried Underground and in 1972 it was loan to the Louvre in Paris for a month. In 2003, Egypt demanded the Rosetta Stone be returned. To date that request has not been honored by the British.

The Rosetta Stone was written in 3 languages: Hieroglyphics, the script used for important religious documents, Demotic, the common script of Egypt and classical Greek, the language of the rulers of Egypt. A French scholar deciphered the text which required 14 years.
