In 1875, Rodin visited Italy and studied the art works of Renaissance masters Donatello and Michelangelo. The Italian trip was the turning point of Rodin's career which influenced the creation of this sculpture, The Age of Bronze. The sculpture gained him notoriety when it created a scandal at the Paris Salon in 1877 because critics believed he had used a casting in order to get such a realistic piece.
