Alexander Hamilton, a delegate to the Constitutional Convention and major author of the Federalist papers, was the United States' first secretary of the treasury and a member of the Founding Fathers. Although Hamilton served in Washington's cabinet for only five years, many historians regard him as the greatest and most influential Secretary of the Treasury in US history. In 1804, Hamilton used his influence to disparage Vice President Aaron Burr's run for Governor of New York. Burr blamed Hamilton for his loss and challenged Hamilton to a duel Hamilton was shot and died on July 11, 1804.
