The crawling pose echoes images of the infant Krishna, called Bala Gopala. In both traditions, the toddler is a figure of pure delight. Here one raised hand curls toward his trunk. It recalls the modak, the sweet dumpling he loves best. Devotees still leave sweets for him at shrines. A Bal Ganesh statue like this one invites a smile.

Reading the Symbols on This Bal Ganesh Statue

Ganesh is the son of Shiva and Parvati. Hindus honor him as the remover of obstacles. Worshippers call on him before beginning any new task. A serpent winds across his shoulder and chest like a sacred cord. Snakes belong to Shiva, so this one signals the bond between father and son. A U-shaped mark on his brow resembles a devotional tilaka. Bangles, anklets, and flower earrings dress him as a beloved prince. The crosshatched dhoti and fine strands of hair show careful detailing. Every Bal Ganesh statue repays a slow look.

A Small Ganesh Statue for Everyday Display

This small Ganesh statue sits easily on a desk, bookshelf, or home altar. Sculptors have cast him in bronze for centuries. A 12th century Chola bronze at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was made to join festival processions. Images of him range from grand temple icons to a small Ganesh statue for the home shelf. Any baby Ganesh statue carries that devotion into daily life. This pewter Ganesh figurine continues that tradition.

For More Reading from the Web

Browse the Met's essays and objects on the elephant-headed god and his family. Ganesha - Metropolitan Museum of Art

See a 12th century Chola Ganesh that once traveled in festival processions. Ganesha, Chola period - Metropolitan Museum of Art

Follow his many names, symbols, and legends in one overview. Ganesha - Wikipedia
