Paul Klee was an explorer whose territory was the world that exists in the innermost part of men's minds. The whole purpose of his art was to make this world visible by mapping its landscape, portraying its inhabitants, and reporting its sorrows and joys. Though expressed in symbolism peculiarly his own, Klee's interior cosmos often seems as real as the world around us. Appreciation of his achievement has been growing continually since his death in 1940, and this reissue of Werner Haftmann's valuable introduction to his life, teaching, and work will be widely welcomed.
In each chapter, the author examines Klee's outlook-his theories about drawing and painting and how they were influenced by contact with other artists and other arts-during a different period of his life, from the exuberant days in Munich and his formative period at the Bauhaus to his unhappy return to Switzerland late in his life. Klee emerges against the background of twentieth-century art not only as an artist but as a sympathetic human being who wanted to give men a chance to see things differently.
