Its lion body symbolized royal strength, and its human head showed the king's wisdom. This Giza Sphinx statue keeps both ideas. Carved from a single outcrop of limestone, it was made about 2500 BC. It has the body of a lion and a human head, likely a pharaoh's portrait. Sand buried it for long periods, and rulers and archaeologists have cleared it many times. It remains the world's best known monument of ancient Egypt.

For More Reading

World History Encyclopedia: Great Sphinx

The Metropolitan Museum of Art: Sphinxes
