Heroes such as Theseus, Heracles, and Achilles fought them. Homer called them equals of men. Greek art shows them riding and shooting bows. Each amazon warrior woman in the Greek tales stood as a rival to heroes.

Warrior Women in the Graves

The Greeks met the Scythians, nomadic horse riding archers, around the seventh century BC. Burial mounds once assumed to hold men have held women buried with weapons. DNA tests show about 300 such women. The Scythians are seen as real world inspiration for the Amazon tales. A greek amazon bust recalls these women as well as the myth.

The Laurel Wreath

The laurel wreath comes from ancient Greece and is made of bay laurel. Apollo is shown wearing one. Wreaths crowned victors in music, poetry, and sport. In Rome they marked martial victory.
