The poems date to the late 8th or early 7th century BC. Most ancient biographies show him as a blind, wandering bard. A homer portrait bust like this one draws on the poet's long fame. The Iliad follows the quarrel of Agamemnon and Achilles. The Odyssey follows Odysseus on his ten year journey home from Troy.

The Birthplace Debate

Ancient sources offered many claims for his birthplace. Chios and Smyrna were both named. Scholars still debate whether Homer existed. This is called the Homeric Question. No single account of Homer's life became mainstream. A greek poet mask suits that air of mystery. Most researchers believe the poems were first passed on by voice.

Display Notes

A mask of Homer suits a library, a study, or a mantel. The ancient fragment look comes from the finish, not from age. The Ionian green brown finish is applied to a plaster replica. Set the homer portrait bust on a shelf, a desk, or a mantel. The ancient fragment look pairs well with books and aged wood.

About Classical Portraits

Portraits of poets honor the writers who shaped our stories.
