Several French artists shared that surname. One was the sculptor Mathurin Moreau of Dijon, who lived from 1822 to 1912. His brothers Auguste and Hippolyte also sculpted. We cannot name the maker of this piece with certainty. This lady with flowers statue reproduces that antique. His marble La Fileuse stands in the Luxembourg Palace.

A Victorian Taste for Grace

Victorian parlors and gardens favored dainty figures of women with flowers. Such pieces reflect the ornate taste of the late 1800s. A victorian garden statue like this one could stand on a pedestal or a console. The graceful female statue looks lovely from every angle. Ornate interiors, heavy drapes, and crowded shelves set the scene. Today the lady with flowers statue still recalls that parlor charm.

Displaying the Statue

Set her where light falls from the side.
