The Statue of Liberty is a colossal neoclassical sculpture located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. Designed by Frederic Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28th, 1886, the statue served as a gift to the United States from the people of France. The statue shows a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. She bears a torch and a law tablet that is inscribed with the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4th 1776. The broken chain at her feet also symbolizes freedom.
