They were inscribed on two stone tablets. Moses broke the first set. A second set was placed in the Ark of the Covenant. Chabad teaches that the first tablet covers duties to God. The second covers duties between people. Ten commandments stone tablets are often shown as paired arched panels. Many homes display ten commandments plaques in a study or hall.

The Ark That Held Them

The Ark was a gold-covered acacia wood chest. Two cherubim topped its cover. Israelites carried it through the wilderness. It later rested in the holy of holies of Solomon's Temple. Its fate after 587 BC is unknown. A ten commandments wall hanging often recalls that sacred chest.

Hanging the Plaques

Hang the two plaques side by side with a small gap. Artists have shown the law as two rounded tablets for centuries. This simple form makes the set easy to recognize.
