This Thai standing Buddha bronze statue is lost-wax cast, and its dark patina deepens the fine detail. It brings 22 inches of calm authority to a room, as a Thai standing Buddha bronze statue should.

Thai tradition calls this pose Calming the Ocean. It recalls the moment when the Buddha stopped the Niranjana River from flooding. The gesture is the double abhaya mudra, a sign of fearlessness and reassurance.

Thai artists also dress the Buddha in royal costume, with crown, jeweled collar, and ornate belt. Such elaborate decoration came to characterize Thai Buddhist imagery of the 19th and 20th centuries. This crowned Buddha statue follows that tradition.

Royal Dress, Quiet Gesture

A tall crown, a beaded collar, and a pleated belt panel show a Buddha dressed as a king. Yet the raised hands speak of peace. This Calming the Ocean Buddha lives in that contrast. In Thai custom, the standing pose is linked with Monday.

Lost-wax casting preserves fine detail, from the jewelry to the pleats. Few Calming the Ocean Buddha figures show such crisp ornament. A Thai Buddhist bronze gains warmth as it ages. The figure stands on a double lotus pedestal, a classic Buddhist symbol of purity.

Product Details

Subject: Standing crowned Buddha, Calming the Ocean pose

Origin: Thailand

Material: Bronze metal, lost-wax cast

Size: 22 in H x 7.75 in W x 7.5 in D

Weight: 14.8 lbs

View more in our Asian Art Collection

Display Notes

In Thai custom, Buddha images are placed high and treated with respect. The Sukhothai period gave us slender, graceful figures. The kingdom of Ayutthaya, which flourished from the 1300s to the 1700s, developed its own strong style. Later Thai artists favored richly dressed, crowned Buddhas. A crowned Buddha statue like this one carries that long Thai Buddhist bronze tradition forward.

For More Reading

University of Michigan Museum of Art: Buddha in royal attire

Worcester Art Museum: Standing Buddha

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0615/0537/products/statues-standing-bodhissatva-bronze-statue-22h-at-362-1.jpeg?v=1571438797
