Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who studied in France/Belgium, taught in England and eventually settled in France for his final years. Van Goghs most popular works are from the last two years of his life. Thirteen months before his death, Van Gogh checked himself into an asylum. From his window, he could see this vista of the village of Saint-Remy. It is both a landscape scene of a night sky over a village and church, as well as an internal landscape of the inner-workings of Van Gogh's mind.

Van Gogh's brushwork is a highway of vibrant color which pulsates across the canvas. For Van Gogh, this everyday scene has become a passionate fantasy enveloping us and overtaking our senses. -- Nina, Curator.
