In Hindu mythology, the God Ganesha is the result of a tragedy. A long time ago, the goddess Parvati, Shiva's wife, gave birth to Skanda, her first child. Her joy was such that from her breasts began to flow sacred milk. With the mixture of that divine nectar and the sandalwood paste with which the body was smeared, the goddess modeled her second son, Ganesha, to whom she entrusted the protection of her palace. Filled with zeal, Ganesha prevented Shiva himself from accessing his wife's abode.
In a terrible rage, Shiva cut the head of the stubborn young man right there. Parvati, desperate for this act of barbarism, threatened to destroy the entire universe. To appease his wife's grudge, Shiva promised that he would cut off the head of the first creature that passed near the palace and place it on the body of the divine child. That first creature was an elephant walking around the place and that's how it ended up with an elephant head on top of a child's body.
