The Lady and the Unicorn is a series of six tapestries woven in Flanders of wool and silk and is often considered one of the greatest works of art of the Middle Ages in Europe. Five of the tapestries are interpreted as depicting the five senses: taste, hearing, sight, smell, and touch and a sixth one named desire that is believed to mean representing love or understanding. Each of the six tapestries depicts a noble lady with the unicorn on her left and a lion on her right and some include a monkey in the scene.

In this tapestry, the sense of hearing is depicted by the lady playing an instrument at center while her maidservant assists. The monkey, unicorn, dogs and animals gather to listen to the beautiful music. The original was woven in Flanders in the late 15th century.
