About the Artwork
In 1938, the city of Toulouse commissioned The Air to honor the pioneering pilots of the airmail service L’Aéropostale, many of whom lost their lives in service. Maillol’s composition conveys a sense of lift and movement while remaining grounded in classical form—a visual poem to freedom, flight, and the human spirit’s desire to transcend boundaries.
About the Artist: Aristide Maillol (1861–1944)
Aristide Maillol devoted his career to exploring the female nude as a vessel for timeless ideals of balance, mass, and proportion. Influenced by classical Greek sculpture, he emphasized calm geometry and pure volume over emotional gesture. His work bridges the traditions of antiquity with the simplicity of modern form, influencing later sculptors such as Henry Moore. Maillol’s art remains a cornerstone of 20th-century modern classicism.
