Greek Plaque of Ergastines Athenian Procession Parthenon Wall Hanging Relief 27.5L

The Peplos Procession Walks Again: A Parthenon Frieze Plaque

Citizens of ancient Athens gather for the most sacred moment of their festival. This Parthenon frieze plaque reproduces a scene from the Athenian procession honoring the goddess Athena. It is part of the ceremony of presenting the peplos cloak.

The peplos was a robe offered to the statue of Athena at the center of the Parthenon. The frieze shows the climactic scene of the entire festival. It is reproduced here after an original plaque in the Louvre Museum, dated 445 to 438 BC. The Parthenon frieze plaque is reproduced from that tradition.

The Ergastines, or weavers, helped make the cloak. Their calm, rhythmic figures show how Greek sculptors could turn ritual into poetry. This Ergastines Athenian procession relief keeps that quiet order. This Greek wall relief keeps the rhythm.

A Long Frieze in a Single Slab

The relief is shallow, so the figures read as a flowing line. Folds of cloth fall in gentle parallels. This Greek wall relief suits a long, bare wall. A Parthenon frieze replica reads best from a distance.

The resin is made to look aged. Browse more in our Greek and Roman collection. A Parthenon frieze plaque of this length makes a strong statement above a sofa or desk. Every Ergastines Athenian procession relief hints at a vanished festival.

The Parthenon Sculptures

The Parthenon rose on the Athenian Acropolis between 447 and 432 BC, under the direction of the sculptor Pheidias. Its sculpture had three parts. These were 92 carved metopes, a long frieze, and pediment figures. Most of the surviving pieces are now divided between Athens, London, and Paris. Together they form the finest record of Classical Greek relief carving.
