Sakountala or L'abandon (The Abandonment)
This early work refers directly to Camille Claudel's troublesome lover's relationship with Auguste Rodin. The dramatic plaster sculpture was first exhibited at the Salon of 1888. The title Sakountala refers to the main character in a narrative by the fifth century Hindu poet Kalidasa. After being bewitched, the dashing prince Dushyanta forgets that he is married to the young Sakountala. When he meets her again later, he kneels down before her and asks for forgiveness.
