Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who studied in France and Belgium, taught in England, and spent his final years in France. His most celebrated works are from the last two years of his life. Thirteen months before his death, Van Gogh checked himself into an asylum. From his window, he viewed the scene of Saint-Remy, depicted here as both a nighttime landscape of a village and a church and an internal reflection of Van Gogh's mind.
