Akhenaten's New Art

Amenhotep IV ruled from 1353 to 1336 BC. He soon renamed himself Akhenaten and founded a new capital, Akhetaten, now El Amarna.

He worshiped only Aten, the solar disk. Under him, Egyptian art became more life-like and naturalistic.

The Workshop of Thutmose

The master sculptor Thutmose led the royal workshop. Before then, only static, idealizing portraits existed.

In 1912 excavators found many unfinished pieces there. They included three portraits of Akhenaten's daughters and his wife Nefertiti.

The hollows where the eyebrows belong were to be inlaid with semi-precious stones. This Thutmose workshop replica keeps that unfinished air.

Why So Long a Skull?

The long skulls might show a hereditary deformity or the binding of infants' skulls. They could also exaggerate the beauty ideals of the day.

Any Akhenaten daughter bust raises the question. See more in our Egyptian Museum Replicas and Parastone Museum Replicas.

Display and Care

At 7.5 lbs, the Amarna princess head statue needs a sturdy shelf or table. Dust the Egyptian princess head replica with a soft dry cloth.

Amarna in Brief

Amarna art lasted only a short time. After Akhenaten, Egypt returned to its old gods. The Amarna princess head statue remains a vivid record of that bold experiment.
