A Volcanic Origin

Amethyst forms in volcanic rock and is colored violet by radiation. It is a purple variety of quartz.

Trace iron in the quartz is key. Natural radiation acting on the iron creates the color. That is why each amethyst crystal specimen differs.

The Geodes of Brazil

Rio Grande do Sul is home to volcanic geodes that are among the most abundant sources of amethyst. A Rio Grande do Sul amethyst begins as a hollow in cooled lava.

It is one of the most recognizable minerals. See more in our Natural History Collection.

Display and Care

Keep the amethyst out of strong sun. Wipe it with a soft cloth.
