A Spiral From a Vanished Sea
Ammonites were shelled relatives of octopus and nautilus. These ones lived in the seaway between Madagascar and the old continent of Gondwana. Cutting and polishing one reveals the chambered spiral inside.
Quartz grew inside the empty chambers over millions of years. That is why an ammonite pendant necklace can glitter with crystals.
Snakestones and Horns of Ammon
The Greeks called ammonites horns of Ammon, after the ram-horned god. In England they were snakestones, and a legend says Saint Hilda turned the snakes of Whitby to stone.
Wear the ammonite earrings as a small story. For a longer or different look, pair the pendant with our 18 inch Silver-Plated Snake-Link Necklace Chain. See more fossils in our Natural History Collection.
Display and Care
Store your ammonite jewelry in its box. Keep the sterling silver ammonite pieces dry and wipe with a soft cloth.
About Madagascar Ammonites
Madagascar is a famous source of fossil ammonites. Their chambers often fill with quartz. Each ammonite pendant necklace or set of ammonite earrings is cut from a different animal.
