Reading the Symbols
The top is an ankh, a cross with an open eye, that symbolizes eternal life. A square medallion in the opening shows the god Heh.
The shaft is a djed column with four horizontal bars. It is often associated with Osiris, the king of eternity, and it stands for stability.
Djed amulets were placed near the spine of mummies to support resurrection.
The Was Scepter and the Seth Animal
A holy was scepter appears in relief on the column. It ends in the head of the Seth animal.
The was is a symbol of power. Here it recalls the power of Seth, the god of storms, over the chaos he creates.
This Djebel Barkal replica copies an amulet found near the holy mountain in Nubia, in northern Sudan. Thutmosis III added the area to the Egyptian empire, around 1450 BC. See more in our Egyptian Museum Replicas.
Display and Care
At 0.2 lbs, the Ankh Djed Was amulet fits a desk, bookshelf, or curio cabinet. Dust it with a soft dry brush. The metal stand lifts out for easy cleaning of the resin.
Amulets in Egyptian Belief
Egyptians wore and buried amulets for protection. Many a Nubian Egyptian amulet followed that custom, which shows the belief spreading south. Each shape carried a wish, and combining them multiplied the wish. The Egyptian composite amulet is a small summary of those hopes. This Ankh Djed Was amulet carries three of them.
