The Statue in the Vatican
The Apollo Belvedere is a Roman marble copy of a Greek bronze. The lost original is attributed to Leochares and dates to about 330 to 320 BC. The marble was found in the late 15th century. Pope Julius II placed it in the Cortile del Belvedere in the Vatican. This hand cast plaster bust keeps the calm of the marble original.
What the Bust Shows
A thin fillet binds the loose curls. A chlamys, or cloak, drapes across the chest and fastens at the shoulder with a round clasp. The surface has the smooth, even plane of the marble original. The bust sits on a stepped pedestal base. The fillet and chlamys mark this bust as the Apollo Belvedere type. A stepped pedestal base lifts the head and shoulders.
Winckelmann and the Ideal
In 1755, Johann Joachim Winckelmann praised the statue for its noble simplicity and quiet grandeur. It became a leading work of Neoclassicism. Browse more pieces in our Museum Statues collection. Apollo was the god of the sun, music, healing, and prophecy. The fillet and chlamys are his marks here. Choose an apollo belvedere bust to honor that range.
