A Demigod's Dramatic Story

Asclepius was the son of Apollo and Coronis, and father of Hygieia and Panacea. Hygieia was goddess of health, and Panacea was goddess of remedies.

In the myth, Coronis was laid on a funeral pyre while pregnant. At the last minute, her son was freed from her body.

Asclepius grew so skilled that he could raise the dead. Zeus struck him down with a lightning bolt to restore order.

Why a Snake on the Staff?

The staff with a snake wound around it is his standard attribute, as every staff and snake statue shows. The Greeks believed snakes belonged to the underworld, which held the key to life and to curing illness.

The sanctuary at Epidaurus grew into a complex with a stadium and a large building for patients. Patients slept in a special room. There the god was believed to visit them in dreams and prescribe cures.

A staff and snake statue like this still echoes the symbol of medicine. The Epidaurus Asclepius figurine recalls that place. Explore more in our Parastone Museum Replicas and Museum Statues Collection.

Display and Care

This god of medicine statue suits a doctor's office or a study. Dust it with a soft dry cloth. Keep the resin away from damp air and strong sun. Any Asclepius Greek statue looks best on a clean shelf.

Greek Healing Cults in Brief

Healing sanctuaries of Asclepius attracted pilgrims for centuries. Epidaurus was one of the most famous, with Delphi and Olympia. The Asclepius Greek statue carries that devotion into the modern home. Its stadium survives and is used for plays today.
