Rhythm in Stone: The Baton Sprite Statue
This baton sprite statue adds a note of music to Frank Lloyd Wright's Midway Gardens design. It ranges from a 12 in desk statue to a 64 in grande, cast in reconstituted stone.
Maid in the Mud with Baton is a certified reproduction of a 1913 design. Alfonso Iannelli sculpted it, and its serene face looked down on the party.

Music and Movement at Midway Gardens
Midway Gardens was a concert and dance hall as well as a beer garden. Benny Goodman played in its house band in the early 1920s.
This Midway Gardens dance floor sculpture overlooked one of the dance floors. It was a living ornament of the architecture. Maid in the Mud with Baton keeps the catalog name for this figure. Each baton sprite statue adds that rhythm to a garden.
A Design Built from Geometry
Wright named the figures sprites and co-designed them with Iannelli. The Met owns a Sprite from about 1914 that is 65 in tall.
Its facets reflect Cubism, which was a new influence in 1914. The Frank Lloyd Wright baton sprite shares that angular look. A baton sprite statue and the plain sprite are sister designs.

Display and Care
The baton sprite statue suits a garden wall, a patio, or an entry. Reconstituted stone is made for interior and exterior use. Give each size a firm, level base, and brush it clean. Maid in the Mud with Baton suits a patio or hall. The Frank Lloyd Wright baton sprite is a playful accent. It is also a Midway Gardens dance floor sculpture in miniature.
Frank Lloyd Wright in Brief
Frank Lloyd Wright lived from 1867 to 1959. He trained under Louis Sullivan in Chicago and developed the Prairie style at his Oak Park studio. Midway Gardens opened in 1914 and was among his most colorful commissions. A Midway Gardens dance floor sculpture is a fine memento. Few Frank Lloyd Wright baton sprite designs are as lively.
