A Jazz Cellar Turned Rock Stage

The Cavern opened on 16 January 1957 as a jazz club. Alan Sytner modeled it on the cellar jazz clubs of Paris. It sat beneath a former fruit warehouse that had served as an air raid shelter in World War II.

The Beatles first played the Cavern on 9 February 1961 and made their last appearance on 3 August 1963. Brian Epstein saw them there on 9 November 1961. He soon became their manager. That meeting makes any Beatles collectible from this room historic.

From Closure to Your Cavern Club Brick

British Rail bought the warehouses above the club to build a ventilation shaft for the railway. The shaft was never built. The club closed on 28 May 1973, and the cellar was filled with rubble.

Bricks from the damaged archways were sold off, and our technicians hand-cut each fragment from one of them. Uneven firing and rough materials give every piece its own texture and color. This Liverpool brick fragment is a physical link to the room where the band found its audience.

More Beatles memorabilia and British cultural history wait in our English and British History Collection.

Display and Care

Keep the Cavern Club brick case on a shelf away from direct sun. The fragment sits in a cushioned jar. Many owners display this Beatles collectible beside the large history card.

About the Beatles in Liverpool

Before they reached American television in 1964, the band spent years playing clubs across Liverpool and Hamburg. The Cavern is the venue most tied to that early period. Beatles memorabilia seldom comes closer to the stage than a Cavern Club brick.
