Calabria and Its Perfume Fruit
Bergamot is closely tied to Calabria in southern Italy. From the 17th century, locals pressed the rind against a sponge to collect the oil. Johann Maria Farina built his 1709 Eau de Cologne around it.
A Tree of Disputed Origins
Botanists disagree on whether bergamot is a hybrid of lemon and bitter orange. Some propose China, Greece or Berga in Spain as its birthplace. The trees are not very hardy, so farmers graft them onto bitter orange rootstock.
Using and Storing Your Oil
Add a few drops of this bergamot essential oil to a bath or a diluted base. For a bath, add 10 drops to water and soak for 10 to 20 minutes. For massage, dilute to 4 percent in 96 percent base oil. A cool citrus essential oil also suits a bergamot massage oil blend. Browse more scents in the Fragrance Oils collection or the full Museumize fragrance collection. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid contact with the eyes. Dilute before applying to skin. Keep the cap tight and store the bottle upright, away from heat and direct sun.
Perfumers have prized bergamot since the early 18th century. A bergamot massage oil blend gives the same bright lift. For a gentle soak, bergamot oil for bath is a classic choice. Any cool citrus essential oil should feel fresh, and this one does.
