A Commission for the Theatre

Chagall painted The Blue Circus around 1950 to 1952. It was made with The Dance to decorate the auditorium of the new Watergate Theatre in London.

The canvas now belongs to the Centre Pompidou in Paris. It is on deposit at the Chagall museum in Nice. The Blue Circus tote bag brings that stage set to your shoulder.

Symbols Floating in Blue

A trapeze artist rears up over a green horse that has a human eye. The Chagall museum reads the horse as the artist's double. A fish holds out a bouquet, and a moon plays the violin.

Navy and indigo dominate and pull the scene together. This recycled foldable tote lets that dream scene travel with you.

Why the Circus Returned

Chagall loved the circus from childhood village fairs. In 1926 the dealer Ambroise Vollard invited him to the Cirque d'Hiver in Paris. Nineteen gouaches followed in 1927.

For Chagall, the ring was a metaphor for the world.

Care and Storage

This Blue Circus tote bag uses recycled GREEN CIRCLE fabric that is water-resistant. Hand washing preserves the coating. Machine washing at 86 degrees F / 30 degrees C is fine in a washing bag.

When you are done, fold the Chagall tote bag into its zippered pouch. Hang it by the handle or store it flat. Keep the circus art tote out of long, direct sun to protect the print. Wipe the recycled foldable tote with a damp cloth between washes.

Display the Blue Circus tote bag on a hook when you are home. Gift the Chagall tote bag to a friend who loves museums. Pick the circus art tote for your next gallery visit. The recycled foldable tote also makes a thoughtful present.

Each Blue Circus tote bag comes with its own zippered pouch.
